Abstract:This study of optimization of milling parameters for minimum surface roughness uses Taguchi design application. Maintaining good surface quality involves additional cost or loss of productivity. Taguchi design is an efficient way to find optimum conditions of control factors in milling to obtain less surface roughness. The various control factors taken here are cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. An L9 orthogonal array is used to fit the experimental values.

Abstract:The use of sandwich panels in ship building enabled the structural components to be made of light weight. Its application to small craft have almost been well established because of the high out of plane bending stiffness. Classical laminated plate theory, first order shear deformation theory and higher order theories are used for the analysis of sandwich plate to evaluate the stresses and stress recovery at the ply level are tedious. A finite element method can be used to obtain the global deflection and the stresses developed in the face sheets, core and at the interfaces. The present study brings out the analysis of components of sandwich using finite element software MSC Nastran.

Abstract: Small water-plane area twin hull (SWATH) vessels have distinct geometric features to give them sea-friendliness characteristics. The assessment of the basic characteristics through re-design and assessment are important evolutionary investigations to obtain a good hydrodynamic design. A case study is presented here using a commercial code namely, STAR CCM+ to simulate the steady speed and obtain the kinematics as well as the drag. A study of this kind has value only when necessary validation is performed. For this purpose a scale model has been chosen and towing tank tests have been conducted to independently obtain the flow wave pattern and also the very important characteristic of drag through physical measurement. The computationally obtained values are compared with experimentally measured drag values and presented here.

Abstract:Oil companies use vast amounts of pipeline to transport crude oil from the offshore fields to shore facilities. The laying process of such pipelines needs special vessels equipped with all the facilities to join segments of pipelines and to lay the pipeline onto the seaocean floor. During the laying operation, it should be properly moored to the seabed to limit the motions of the vessel. This paper describes the detailed mooring analysis of a pipelay barge using 8 point anchor mooring system suitable for construction work in shallow water environments and specifies proper mooring rope/wire for the operation. The barge modeling is done in ANSYS Design Modeler and hydrodynamic analysis carried out in ANSYS AQWA. The RAO data is then input to ORCAFLEX where a model with mooring lines attached as per the proposed anchor pattern is analyzed. Abstract: An analytical method is developed,using ray theory, to determine the interior acoustic field in an embedded fluid layer excited by an obliquely incident plane acoustic wave. The magnitude and phase of the field are shown to be correct by comparison with wave theory results. The method can be extended to analyze the pressure field inside sonar domes.

Abstract:The work done is a step towards analyzing the pressure field inside a sonar dome. Acoustic waves from afar are plane when they reach the dome but the wave that is transmitted into the dome is not plane. This occurs because the dome is doubly curved and the angle of incidence is a function of the coordinates of the dome. In this paper, a ray approach is presented to determine the acoustic field when a plane acoustic wave is incident on a solid layer embedded in an infinite fluid. Ray theory is used to determine the reflected and
transmitted waves and the field inside the solid layer.
