Abstract: Harsh parenting is one of the most important predictors of adolescent involvement in risky and sexual behaviors, and substance use. Harsh parenting includes a wide range of aversive parenting behaviors, the most common of which include physical aggression (e.g., spanking, slapping, or hitting), and verbal aggression (e.g., yelling and cursing) directed at children who have done something wrong or angered their parents.
